5 Signs Your Home's Sewer System Needs Repairs or Replacement Service

It is definitely not uncommon for homeowners to take their sewer systems for granted. After all, we rarely think about it until something goes wrong. It is hidden underground, and it does its work quietly every single day, but still, we don’t really think about it that much until we realize that we may have some issues to handle. When the system functions properly, thus, taking it for granted is rather easy.

Here is how it works.

Yet, when we encounter any kind of a problem, we realize that we definitely need this system to function perfectly, and that we want to have the problem fixed right away. The truth is that those problems can quickly develop and become rather expensive, as well as disruptive, and often even hazardous to your property and your health. So, there is absolutely no doubt that you cannot ignore when you have an issue with your sewer system.

The thing is, though, you also don’t have to, and you definitely shouldn’t, wait for a major backup or a flooding event to occur in order to realize that you have a problem that has to be resolved. Quite on the contrary, there are usually some warning signs that can appear long before such a complete failure. And, your task is, of course, to recognize those signs on time, and thus address the problems early, before they become more serious and more costly.

When you know how to recognize those signs of issues, you will also know when to call in the pros to get the system either repaired or replaced, depending on what it may need. And, knowing what to watch for is sure to save you not only time, but also money, and to reduce your stress. So, what we are going to do right now is talk a bit more about some of those common signs that your home’s sewer system needs to be repaired or replaced. Once you read through those, you are sure to have a much better idea about what it is that you should be on the lookout for, as well as when it is that you will have to call in the pros and get expert services. Click this to learn a bit more about the repair and the replacement of your home’s sewer line.

Frequent Drain Clogs Throughout the Entire House

Now, let us start with one rather subtle, and yet quite obvious when you think about it, sign that there is something wrong with your sewer line. Basically, a single clogged bathtub drain or sink may not be major concern and it usually isn’t. After all, all kinds of debris, such as soap residue, hair and grease, can easily lead to those localized blockages that can be pretty simple to remove. Yet, if you notice that multiple drains through your home are repeatedly clogging, that should be a sign for concern.

In short, that should be a sign that there is something much deeper actually wrong with your sewer system. So, if your kitchen sinks are draining slowly, bathtubs are taking a long time to empty, toilets are clogging frequently, drains are making gurgling sounds, and multiple fixtures are backing up at the same time, you should undeniably think about calling in the pros and letting them inspect the system and fix it for you, or replace if necessary. This is because several fixtures being affected at the same time is often an indication of a blockage in the main sewer line, rather than a localized drain issue.

Sewage Backup and Foul Odors

Moving on, if you have noticed that wastewater is backing up into your home, that should be a reason for concern as well. Those backups can occur in floor drains, showers, toilets, bathtubs, as well as basement plumbing fixtures. And, they should always be treated as a rather serious issue, especially since wastewater contains viruses, bacteria and other types of contaminants that could pose serious health risks.

Not, even if the wastewater hasn’t actually entered your home yet, you could notice some foul odors that could indicate some troubles with the sewer lines. After all, a properly functioning system should remain sealed, thus preventing those sewer gases from escaping. Thus, if you are noticing persistent odors, you could be dealing with a crack, a break, or a blockage somewhere in the system. And, you should definitely never ignore this sign, as doing so could result in some more serious issues over time, and more extensive damage to your system, and thus your property.

Foundation Cracks or Other Structural Concerns

What a lot of homeowners often tend not to understand, or to at least ignore for one reason or another is that sewer line issues can cause some problems with your home’s structure as time passes. If a pipe is leaking underground for an extended period of time, the water can alter the soil conditions around the foundation, causing soil expansion, erosion or shifting. And as the ground moves, the foundation of your home can become unevenly supported.

So, some potential warning signs of this can include new foundation cracks, as well as cracks in the ceilings or walls, uneven flooring, windows becoming too difficult to open, and doors sticking or failing to close properly. If you notice any signs like these, you should definitely think about getting sewer repair or replacement services right away. That way, you will prevent further structural damage.

Soggy Areas in Your Yard

Soggy areas around the yard, patches of unusually lush grass, sunken lawn sections, standing water in the yard… All of those are also signs that you need sewer system repairs or replacements. So, don’t ignore them, as ignoring these signs could lead to excess moisture softening the soil over time and thus causing the ground to settle or sink.

Aging Pipes and Recurring Problems

Finally, if your sewer pipes are old, and if you’re experiencing recurring problems with the system, you should definitely call in the pros. Corrosion, ground movement, root intrusion, material breakdown, joint separation, and similar things can all lead to the system deteriorating. And, you want to act right away, before this turns into a serious problem for your property, and a health concern for that matter.
